CCCU Chaplaincy use drug and crime film Trainspotting for poster inspiration

Canterbury Christ Church have displayed a poster inspired by ‘black comedy crime film’ Trainspotting at their main reception.

Trainspotting is a nineties film starring Ewan McGregor (Mark Renton) and Jonny Lee Miller (Simon Williamson), both heroin addicts, involves drug use, crime and sex with an underage school girl.

Original poster

The original Trainspotting poster, reads:

“Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves.”

In comparison, the university’s take on the British Film Awards nominee wasn’t as explicit as the original, which now has a sequel out.

The CCCU’s Chaplaincy poster, reads:

“Choose life. Choose a course. Choose a University. Choose your friends, a socia group, a club, a society. Choose a newphoneand blowing your student loan in the first four weeks of term. Choose Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Choose waking up, loggin on, laughing, crying, uploading, tagging, posting, retweeting as you lie in bed reliving the night before. Choose to attend nine o’clock lectures, preetending to be bright, alert and awake whilst downing caffeine and secretly reading someone else’s notes. Choose to eat organic and not have enough money. Choose takeaways every day and partying every night, and wondering where your student loan went. Choose to try and get along with people you don’t know or even like. Choose to volunteer. Choose to write assignments and further yourself. Choose your friends, choose looking after one another on a night out, choose to be vulnerable, choose to ask for help. Choose life. Choose Chaplaincy.”

CCCU Chaplaincy have been contacted for a comment, but haven’t yet replied.
