Everything you need to know about volunteering at CCCU

Volunteering can not only be good for your future employment but it can help develop other professional skills and most of all be fun.

Have you ever considered volunteering?

Most people applying for the jobs you will be interested in will also have degrees, so you need to show them what else you can offer. What other skills do you have that makes you stand out from the rest of the applicants and what experiences put you infant of the rest?

A few stats

Apart from the fact that volunteering actually makes you happier (according to a Harvard study carried out by LSE), did you know that 73% of graduate employers would employ a student with volunteering experience over one without? 94% believe that volunteering adds valuable skills that increase your employability. (Timebank) These are stats not to be sniffed at so if you are wondering how you can get involved whilst you are studying here at Christ Church then here is what you need to know.

How do I get involved?

The University has a Volunteering Department which has drop in sessions at The Core in Augustine House every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10-12 starting from 9th October. If you can’t wait until then, you can register on the volunteering website www.canterburyvolunteering.org.uk

Take a look at some of the roles that we currently have available, but we have many more contacts than there are on the website. If you don’t find what you are looking for then email us on volunteer@canterbury.ac.uk and let us know what interests you.  You will also be able to record your hours which can lead to gaining awards in the future.

What’s coming up?

We have a lot of events throughout the year and our first one is a session with the Fresh Perspectives group to talk about becoming a Trustee. This session is on 11th October at 12.30-2.30 in AH 2.23.  Being a Trustee is an amazing addition to anyone’s CV so it is definitely worth checking out.

Also this Semester we have Volunteering focus week which is from Monday 13th November.  Every day, in both Touchdown  (Laud) and Augustine House, there will be a different organisation. You will be able to come and chat with them, and to some students who already volunteer with them. Come and see how you can gain some valuable and rewarding  experience, details of the organisations attending and the times will be on Unified a little nearer the date so watch this space.
